Wellbores drilled in the coal mining industry are very important to help drain natural methane gas from the seam prior to long-wall mining. The removal of gas benefits the environment because the gas would have normally been vented into the atmosphere. Methane is considered to be 20 times more harmful to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2).
