CUSTOMER CHALLENGE
After several attempts to recover a tubing fish and parted casing, the client eventually decided to P&A the well. The initial plan was to drill to ~ 3,000 ft MD, set a cement plug for sidetracking, and offset the wellbore utilizing ranging. The goal was to track the wellbore position. For instance, the client wanted to reach the final target intercept depth.
SCIENTIFIC SOLUTION
Scientific Drilling’s MagTraC™ Magnetic Ranging and gyroMWD solutions use for wellbore placement. In addition, a gyro survey ran to confirm the fish’s position. Meanwhile, a cement plug set and well sidetracked by utilizing ranging to monitor the offset position.
The initial offset was 18 ft and returned to ~ 5 ft at 5,200 ft. Then, shorter-ranging shots took to verify that the target was close. The final ranging shots were taken at 5,758 ft when SDI intercepted the target.
CUSTOMER VALUE
The wellbore P&A’d successfully, and the client could satisfy all regulatory abandonment requirements.
