Scientific Drilling’s portfolio of API-calibrated gamma ray sensors provides natural measurements close to or at the bit. Real-time gamma-ray data ranges from Total GR to 8 sector azimuthal images.
SMART MOTOR / BITSUB AT-BIT AZIMUTHAL GAMMA RAY & INCLINATION
SMART MOTOR
Scientific Drilling’s Smart Motor & BitSub tool is a short-integrated sensor package. For instance, the package provides at-bit real-time continuous inclination, azimuthal gamma ray, and drilling dynamics measurements. The sensors are in an instrumented Smart Motor or a separate BitSub collar. Therefore, offering a high-precision azimuthal gamma ray less than 2 feet from the bit enables proactive geosteering decisions.
The at-bit continuous inclination gives immediate feedback on wellbore directional trends and motor output. Above all, it allows closer proximity to a well-planned trajectory.
Utilizing the Wi-Sci™ EM short hop for real-time data transmission, a wide selection of mud motor power sections can be used. This EM short hop technology works in water- and oil-based mud systems. Furthermore, it is compatible with Scientific Drilling’s MP-MWD, EM-MWD, and LWD systems.

HAG – HALO AZIMUTHAL GAMMA RAY
Scientific Drilling’s newest azimuthal gamma-ray tool employs an improved design for higher-quality gamma-ray imaging applications. This probe-based sensor is integrated with the HALO RSS or can be placed just above the mud motor in a conventional assembly.
As geosteering target windows thin, the gamma-ray variability can also decrease. Therefore, this leads to uncertainty about whether the wellbore is cutting up or down stratigraphically. For example, employing a larger scintillation crystal and improved azimuthal shielding. The HAG sensor provides better-resolution imaging measurements to aid critical real-time well placement decisions.
DELIVERING THE ULTIMATE VALUE
/ Quadrant real-time Gamma Ray imaging for accurate geologic structural interpretations
/ Decreased bit-to-sensor distances with the HALO RSS
/ Compatible with mud-pulse telemetry and electromagnetic MWD systems w/ conventional mud motor BHA
AZIMUTHAL GAMMA RAY AND INCLINATION (Azi-Gain)
An azimuthal gamma ray solution that provides measurements 20-25 ft (6-8m) closer to the bit than the MWD. It is an excellent tool for Geosteering – helping to keep the bit within the “sweet spot” of the reservoir.
Azi-Gain is placed just above the motor on the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA). Above all, it gives the directional driller enough time to react to formation changes quickly. Azi-Gain can run with any of Scientific Drilling’s MWD and LWD systems in all configurations.
DELIVERING THE ULTIMATE VALUE
/ Provides Up/Down gamma ray and inclination measurements closer than standard MWD
/ Supports all BHA sizes
/ Works seamlessly in real-time with both MP and EM MWD
